Flint Public Library has dedicated a beautiful space in the renovated library to Local History & Genealogy. The room provides access to books, microfilm, Ancestry, scanning and printing. See the More About Our Room page for information about volunteer and staff assistance.
Flint Public Library is home to the second largest open stack genealogical collection in Michigan. It includes a large number of Michigan county histories and Michigan cemetery readings. Our genealogy collection focuses on the New England states, New York, Michigan, several Southern states and the Province of Ontario, Canada.
The Library is also home to one of the largest open access collections of materials on Genesee County, including the City of Flint, its County seat. The collection includes local school yearbooks, City and County directories, local publications, histories of local organizations, as well as city and village histories.
Library Staff can search for and, if found, provide a copy of an obituary. Staff can also do other types of short research projects on local topics by request. A fee of $25 is charged in advance which represents approximately one hour of research. The fee applies whether or not we are successful.
