In 1851, a small but determined group of Flint women made a bold and forward-thinking choice. They believed that children in this community deserved access to books and magazines at a time when free public schools did not yet exist. Their vision was grounded in a powerful idea that access to knowledge could open doors, strengthen families, and create opportunity for Flint.
Nearly 175 years later, that founding belief continues to guide the work of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. Across generations of change, from handwritten catalog cards to today’s digital resources, the library has grown alongside the people of Flint. What has remained constant is our commitment to being Flint’s trusted place to learn, explore, connect, and grow.
For nearly two centuries, the library has been more than a building. It has been a first library card, a safe place after school, a job search lifeline, a story time favorite, a research partner, and a welcoming gathering space for neighbors and families. Each generation has helped shape the library, and the library continues to play an important role in the life of this community.
In March 2026, the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library will begin a yearlong celebration of our 175th anniversary. Throughout the year, we will honor the vision that started it all, celebrate how far we have come, and share the stories of the people who continue to bring our mission to life every day.
As we reflect on our history, we are also focused on the future. The next chapter of the library is being built together with our community through new ideas, new partnerships, and new opportunities to serve Flint in meaningful ways.
Never miss a moment of the celebration. Check out the full calendar of anniversary events at fpl.info and join us throughout this historic year.
