The Gloria Coles Flint Public Library's Saturday Community Pantry saw a significant increase in the number of households served in recent weeks, reflecting a growing need for food access in Flint as families experience ongoing SNAP benefit reductions and rising food insecurity.
On November 1, the Library welcomed Congresswomen Kristin McDonald-Rivet for a press event inside the building to elevate awareness around food insecurity trends and to amplify public understanding of how national level disruptions show up inside local public spaces.
As a public library, our mission is information access, learning and community support. When real life conditions shift, we make space for people to understand what is happening and where help exists.
"When federal resources are disrupted like SNAP we see the impact quickly. People turn to trusted public spaces. Libraries are one of the first places they come" said Ann Manko, Interim Executive Director of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. "Our pantry serves as a bridge to stability and access. Here in Flint, we show up for each other, and when we do, families truly feel the impact."
