The Pierce-Sarvis Storytelling Project is a Flint Cultural Center collaborative effort between the Flint Public Library, The Flint Insitute of Arts, and Pierce-Sarvis Elementary school. The goal of the project is to introduce students to the power and joy of story. The work presented this evening reflects an interdisciplinary unit of study designed and implemented by the staffs of the Flint Public Library, the Flint Institute of Arts, and Pierce-Sarvis Creative Arts Elementary School.
This unit of study was entitled “Art and Reading: Teaching with Children’s Literature” and focuses on the disciplines of reading, writing, art, technology, and storytelling. Students were involved in a creative process that addressed their Multiple Intelligences, Learning Styles, and higher level thinking skills and covered many State Standards.
Students worked on various aspects of the unit throughout the school year. Mrs. Harris spearheaded the storytelling portion by sharing Aesop and Pourquoi stories and instructing students on writing and storytelling techniques during their classroom visits to the library with Mr. Payne, Ms. Sumner, Ms. Gulley, and Mrs. Hearn. Students worked in class with Mrs. Hearn, writing, editing, and printing original fables and pourquoi tales. During several visits to class, Mrs. Friesen, FIA educator, provided art expertise, techniques, and materials for students to create detailed visual images using depicting their written images and scenes.
A special thank you goes out to all the staff who made this possible and most especially the Pierce/Sarvis 6th Grade Class of 2008!
