Hershel Pritchard,
Sr.
Mr. Hershel Pritchard, Sr. (Shake) expired on Thursday, August 1,
1991. He was born in Dyersburgh, Tennessee, moving to Flint at an early
age. He was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Hershel attended Flint Community Schools, graduating from Northern
in 1941. While at Northern he played baseball and was on the Saginaw
Valley Championship team in 1941 when he was nominated unanimously
All-Valley First Baseman.
He was the first black referee in the City League Basketball, first
black umpire in the City League Softball and a referee in the Factory
League Basketball. He was a softball assistant at Whaley Park and in
1974 became Supervisor of the City Class-A Basketball League. He also
played on the top national, state, and local fastpitch teams.
Hershel was a committeeman and alternate shop committeeman until his
retirement from Buick in January, 1980, after 30 years of faithful
and unwavering service.
He was one of the founders of the Greater Flint Afro-American Hall
of Fame and a member of the Old-timers Club.
