Arthur, a Flint high school star participated in three sports (basketball,
football, track) at Central High School, and two sports (football,
track) at M.S.U.
While at Central, in 1947, he was on the City and Valley Basketball
Championship Teams. Also in 1947, Arthur was on the City, Valley and
State Football Championship Teams. He was an All-Valley End and Honorable
Mention All-State in football.
At Central in 1947, Arthur was voted the Most Outstanding track man
in the state. He won the 100 yard dash and tied the state 220 yard
dash record, set in 1924 (21.7 seconds). He was the indoor 60 yard
dash state champion for the years 1946, 47, 48. He held the Saginaw
non-grad record in the 100 yard dash (10.3) and the 220 yard dash (23.6)
in 1947. Also in 1947, at the Saginaw High meet, he set a record of
10.2 in the 100 yard dash, and was the Valley 100 and 220 yard dash
champion in 1947 and 1948.
While at M.S.U. he was the 1950-54 indoor 60 yard dash champion. He
finished second at the 1950 Big Ten NCAA Meet.
After his college career, Art lived and worked in Chicago. He began
a career in Computer Science at IBM in Chicago as a branch manager
trainee. He moved to Southern California in 1964 as an Aerospace Industry
Programmer and advanced to manager. In 1973 Arthur was accepted as
a candidate for a Ph.D. at Claremont College, and in 1983 he taught
business at California State College.
At present, Arthur is a Computer Science Instructor at Los Angeles
College, District of Los Angeles, California.
Arthur's twin brother Oscar, is also being inducted into the Greater
Flint Afro-American Hall of Fame (Posthumously).
