John Gillian
2000 Greater Flint
Afro-American Hall of Fame Inductee
Category: BASKETBALL
Parent: R. Myrick
Sons: John, Ill and Henry
John grew up on the north side of Flint, where he attended Jefferson,
Fairview, Roosevelt and Clark Elementary Schools. He attended Emerson
Jr. High and graduated from Flint Northern, Genesee Community College
and attended Eastern Michigan University.
While at Flint Northern, John was the leading scorer on the basketball
team. He was All Saginaw Valley First Team, named to two All State First
Teams, and voted MVP by his teammates.
John did not enter college upon graduation. He made his presence known
in the city Class AA League, where he was regarded as a fine shot and
perhaps the best relief man in the City AA League. In 1970, John was
among the top 15 scorers seven times in the City AA League.
After playing in the City AA League for 10 years, John entered Genesee
Community College. Because of his age and his experience, it was hard
to stop the "old man" as he was sometimes called. In his two
years at Genesee Community College, John scored 1,410 points in 51 games
for a 27.6 average. He was second on Genesee Community College's all
time scoring list, and was a co-winner of the Athlete of the Year Award.
In 1972, he was selected to the Outstanding College Athlete Hall of
Fame.
In 1978 John became the first Black coach at Genesee Community College.
John makes his home in Flint.
