Friends of the Flint Public Library

About the Friends

The Friends of the Flint Public Library is a nonprofit group of citizens who work together to support and enlarge the scope of public library service in Flint.

They believe in public libraries as vital centers of communication necessary for providing people with the understanding of the complex issues of this modern world. They encourage the use of the library as a center for cultural and civic life of the community. They also believe in the freedom to read and the value of books and reading. They endorse the stated philosophy and objectives of the Flint Public Library.

Since its founding in 1952, the Friends have provided direct financial assistance by purchasing special items which would be of great benefit, but cannot be purchased from the library budget. This includes signs, and display cases, grand piano, and contributions for the bookmobile.

They underwrite projects such as Book Week and National Library Week programs and book sales. They encourage gifts, endowments and memorials for the library.

The Friends assist with programs designed to add to the cultural and social life of the community. Examples are Blues and Storytelling Festivals, Winter Jazz Concerts and Holiday Walks.
